Women in Remarketing: Capital One’s Deann Flora

Automatic remarketing recognizes the 2022 Women in Remarketing winners in the May issue of the magazineand post Q&As with each of these outstanding leaders on the website.

Next up is Deann Flora, regional head of remarketing at Capital One.

Automotive Remarketing: What is the biggest trend you are seeing in automotive remarketing/wholesale this year?

DeanFlora: Supply constraint is the biggest trend this year. This impacts every part of our business, from what is available for financing to the number of units in the wholesale market. This topic also encourages discussion of our global economy and supply chain distribution to depths we have never encountered. In terms of remarketing, the offer made us really question whether proven ways of differentiating are as valuable as we think in absolute terms.

AR: What impact has technology/innovation had the most on your specific area of remarketing/wholesale?

Flora: I’ve spent part of my career in the online space and I know how valuable a strong digital presentation is, especially to our buyers. Although sellers have historically used a variety of options to represent their units, I have always favored selling online due to the complexity of our portfolio. As we have all experienced, the pandemic has necessitated the availability of fully developed online channels. Incorporating the best of both worlds as I return to an in-person sales experience has had the greatest personal impact.

AR: What career advice would you give to someone new to the industry?

Flora: Be true to your words. Personal integrity transcends industry and its importance cannot be overstated. You may change roles or companies, but industry colleagues always remember if your behavior matches what you say. Even difficult messages are better received if your actions reinforce your words and remain consistent from entry-level employee to C-suite to customer.

AR: What is your proudest moment/achievement, career-wise?

Flora: Work occupies so much of our lives; it is important to create an environment where people feel included and empowered. Learning to identify what’s important to my team and cut through the noise has been a primary goal throughout my career. This specific pursuit has helped me foster a dynamic where our main focus is on achieving goals and increasing our efficiency. Watching former and current members of my team realize their potential, through some of these core philosophies, is my proudest moment.
