HPQ files provisional patent application for silicon by-product created by PUREVAP ™ QRR as anode material for lithium-ion batteries
Preliminary but promising results show a capacity 3 to 4 times greater than that of graphite for lithium-ion batteries

MONTREAL, Dec. 2020 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) – Provider of innovative silicon solutions HPQ Silicon Resources Inc. (“HPQ” or “the Company”) (TSX-V: HPQ; FWB: UGE; Other OTC: URAGF), is pleased to inform shareholders that the promising results of electrochemical performance tests carried out with silicon-based by-products manufactured by the GEN2 PUREVAPMT Quartz reduction reactor (“QRR”) motivated the company to file a provisional patent application for their manufacture, assembly and use as anode materials for lithium-ion batteries.
The patent application follows the completion of a series of tests carried out on the material produced by the GEN2 PUREVAPMT QRR at the Center Énergie Matériaux Télécommunications (EMT) of INRS by Professor Lionel ROUÉ as part of a NSERC engagement grant and a NSERC engagement plus grant.
PUREVAPMT QRR SILICON BY-PRODUCTS: A SUPERIOR ANODE MATERIAL THAN GRAPHITE
Although preliminary, the results obtained are more than promising since the silicon-based by-product produced with Gen2 PUREVAPMT QRR has maintained a gravimetric capacity ≥ 1,200 mAh / g for over 100 charge / discharge cycles, a capacity 3-4 times that of graphite currently used in commercial Li-ion batteries. This material also shows promise in terms of high speed performance. (See figure 1 below)
“This is another demonstration of our multi-pronged approach to becoming a key supplier of silicon-based materials to the battery industry and beyond. The unique capabilities of PUREVAPMT The Nano Silicon Reactor (Si) (“NSiR”) will allow us to fully exploit the potential of Silicon and its by-products produced by PUREVAPMT Quartz reduction reactor (“RRQ”) ” said Bernard Tourillon, President and CEO of HPQ Silicium. “The potential of silicon to meet the demand for energy storage is undeniable, generating massive investments, and a serious interest in the industry. We are very confident that the demand for the silicon materials we will produce, with our scalable low cost processes, will be in high demand by battery and electric vehicle manufacturers in this renewable energy revolution.
About HPQ Silicium
HPQ Silicon Resources Inc. (TSX-V: HPQ) is a Canadian supplier of innovative silicon solutions.
Silicon (Si), also known as silicon metal, is today one of the key strategic materials needed for the decarbonization of the economy and the renewable energy revolution (“RER”).
Silicon is the most abundant element in the earth’s crust but does not exist in a pure state and must be extracted from quartz (SiO2) in what has always been a capital and energy intensive process. HPQ builds a portfolio of silicon-based products using innovative scalable processes. The goal is to produce high value specialty silicon products using technologies that will reduce energy consumption, GHGs and carbon footprint.
Work with PyroGenèse Canada Inc. (TSX: PYR), a high-tech company that designs, develops, manufactures and markets plasma-based processes, HPQ develops:
the PUREVAPMT “Quartz reduction reactors” (QRR), an innovative process (patent pending), which will allow the transformation into one step of quartz (SiO2) in high purity silicon (Si) at reduced costs, energy input and carbon footprint which will spread its considerable renewable energy potential.
Through its wholly-owned subsidiary HPQ NANO Silicon Powders Inc, the PUREVAPMT Nano Silicon Reactor (NSiR), a new proprietary process that can use different purities of silicon (Si) as raw material, to manufacture a wide range of nano / microspherical powders of different sizes and nanowires.
HPQ believes it may also become the cheapest manufacturer of spherical Si nanopowders and silicon-based composites needed by next-generation lithium-ion battery makers..
In the coming months, spherical composite samples of Si nanopowders and silicon-based nanowires requested by industry participants and research institutes will be produced using PUREVAPMT SiNR.
HPQ also works with industry leader Apollon Solar from France to:
